White oak floors, warm white walls, and simple trim profiles give you a foundation that works with nearly anything and won't feel dated in fifteen years. The character comes from your lighting, your furniture, and the architectural details that are specific to your home.
Hardware and Fixtures as Jewelry
The pieces you touch every day — door handles, cabinet pulls, faucets — have an outsized impact on how a home feels. Unlacquered brass, brushed nickel, and matte black all hold up well over time. Avoid ultra-trendy finishes in mixed metals unless you're prepared to replace them.
Proportion Over Decoration
Well-proportioned rooms with thoughtful ceiling heights, properly scaled windows, and trim that relates correctly to the architecture will always feel better than a room with average bones covered in decorative details. Get the bones right first.
